Sustainability Initiatives at the Museum of Us

The Museum of Us believes in creating a healthy community and environment for our guests. Through our sustainability initiatives and project implementation supported by the Balboa Park Sustainability Program, we have been able to complete efficiency projects and create innovative programs that benefit generations to come.

LEED® Certification

The Museum was awarded the LEED Gold® certification by the Green Building Certification Institute, the certifying body of the U.S. Green Building Council®, making us the highest ranked LEED-certified building in Balboa Park. LEED, or Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design, is the preeminent program for the design, construction, maintenance, and operations of high-performance green buildings. Projects pursuing LEED certification earn points across several areas that address sustainability issues, and based on the number of points achieved, a project receives one of four rating levels: Certified, Silver, Gold, or Platinum.

Our LEED Gold certification, which falls under the Existing Buildings: Operations + Maintenance rating system, encompasses three historic structures: the California Building, which houses our main museum galleries; the Irving J. Gill Administration Building, which houses staff offices; and the California Tower.

We’re proud to be members of the San Diego Regional Green Business Network.
