May 5th is the National Day of Awareness for Missi May 5th is the National Day of Awareness for Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women, girls, Two Spirits, and relatives.

@Illuminative explains, “National Week of Action for MMIW was created in 2017 in response to families’ demands for justice for our missing and murdered Native relatives. Our #MMIP advocacy cannot end with awareness and must be accompanied by action.

Please support and follow Native organizations who are on-the-ground, doing this work year-round providing resources and tangible support for Native families most impacted by the ongoing MMIP crisis.

These organizations are calling for justice and to protect Native peoples from systemic barriers and violence. Turning grief into action, these Native organizations call upon federal, state, tribal, local, and international policymakers to address MMIP root causes as well as individual cases.

Swipe to learn and support Native organizations doing important #MMIP advocacy work.”

• An interactive map composed of over 3,200 handwritten, geolocated toe tags that represent migrants who have died trying to cross the Sonoran Desert of Arizona
• Cultural resources and family narratives related to these migrations
• A timeline of government policies that have produced conditions that force people to leave home and attempt a perilous journey through hostile terrain
• Land acknowledgement, contemporary artworks, and landscape visuals that situate us in time and space, and help us reflect on the loss

As visitors reflect on the content of the exhibit, they are asked to consider, “What really makes this terrain so hostile?"

Now open Wednesday to Sunday in the Museum of Us.

Progress continues on the mural in the "Maya: Hear Progress continues on the mural in the "Maya: Heart of Sky, Heart of Earth" exhibit. As you can see, muralist and Maya community consultant Alicia María Siu has been hard at work in the museum's rotunda.

Additionally, the exhibit's former mural has been removed. These content and design changes are being made to showcase how Maya Peoples are alive today and actively connected to their ancestors, art, and cultural practices.

Become a Museum of Us Member for free return visits to watch the mural unfold and changes develop! Stay tuned for more changes to come to this exhibit and space.
