The Museum of Us is open Wednesday through Sunday. We will be closed on Monday, April 1, per our usual business hours. Plan Your Visit

Museum exterior illuminated at night, with the words 'Thank You' projected onto the side of the building.

Accountability means a lot at the Museum of Us. It means a commitment to transparency and truth-telling, and it's always paired with action. While it is our goal to embed accountability into all of the work we do, our annual reports and initiatives outline how we put theory and words into action.

Accountability Reports

Our Accountability Reports are comprehensive recaps of the Museum’s programs and initiatives. Released annually, these reports speak to our commitments to equity, inclusion, anti-racism, and our decolonizing initiatives. They are meant to help answer two simple questions: (1) How are we doing as an organization?, and (2) How can we do better as an organization?

These reports also feature an annual “Gratitude List.” Our team’s work simply could not happen without the support of an enormous community – individuals and organizations that support us as thought partners, financial supporters, community representatives, and more.

Archived Annual Reports

Prior to our "Accountability Reports," the Museum published annual and bi-annual reports that shared noteworthy accomplishments over the years. View or download recent annual reports below:

Financial Reports

The Museum of Us, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit, is proud to have received six consecutive 4-star ratings by Charity Navigator. The largest and most-utilized nonprofit evaluator in the United States Charity Navigator is used to evaluate the financial health, accountability, and transparency of charities and nonprofit organizations.

A 4-star rating is Charity Navigator’s highest possible rating, and only 11% of charities evaluated by Charity Navigator have received at least six consecutive 4-star evaluations; indicating that the Museum of Us not only adheres to the best practices of our sector, but exceeds industry standards as well.

Find more information, financial reports, and 990 forms (annual reporting returns that certain federally tax-exempt organizations must file with the IRS) below.

Sustainability Initiatives

We believe in creating healthy communities and environments for all. Our staff works hard to prioritize sustainability throughout Museum operations – and we have the awards to prove it!

LEED® Certification in 2016

In 2016, the Museum was awarded the LEED Gold® certification by the Green Building Certification Institute, the certifying body of the U.S. Green Building Council®, making us the highest ranked LEED-certified building in Balboa Park at the time. LEED, or Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design, is the preeminent program for the design, construction, maintenance, and operations of high-performance green buildings.

Our LEED Gold certification includes three historic structures: the California Building/Quadrangle, which houses our main museum galleries; the Irving J. Gill Administration Building, which houses staff offices; and the California Tower.

Secretary’s Award for Excellence in Museum Sustainability

In 2018, the Museum was awarded the Secretary’s Award for Excellence in Museum Sustainability by the California Association of Museums and the California Natural Resources Agency for our “Every Action Matters” initiative started in 2017. This internal program focused on employee engagement at every level of the organization, and emphasized major goals that are accomplished via small steps by individuals. Our staff developed an Energy Audit Team and took steps such as installing energy monitoring systems, turning off lights when they’re not in use, providing paper straws in the break room, and canceling bottled water delivery services in favor of a new water filtration system. Additionally, 38% of our staff committed to using alternative forms of transportation to get to work, rather than driving a car, from January 2018 to December 2018.

The Museum of Us recognizes that it sits on the unceded ancestral homeland of the Kumeyaay Nation. The Museum extends its respect and gratitude to the Kumeyaay peoples who have lived here for millennia.

The Museum is open Wednesday-Sunday, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.
