About the Exhibit
Kumeyaay Comics by the Kumeyaay Visual Storytelling Project is an immersive exhibit inspired by the two-part graphic novel titled, Our Past, Present, and Future, and Beyond Gaming, authored by Kumeyaay scholars and historians Ethan Banegas, Michael Connolly Miskwish, Lorraine Orosco, and Stanley Rodriguez. The vibrant, colorful comics are illustrated by John Swogger.
Beyond Gaming is a walk-through of a community gathering with tribal historians. Our Past, Present, and Future is a series of two-page spreads telling histories from Kumeyaay perspectives.
The Kumeyaay Cosmology exhibit – which opened in 2015 and was developed by Michael Connolly Miskwish and Mat'taam Naka Shin, the San Diego-Panama Exposition Centennial Intertribal Committee – will remain on display alongside the Kumeyaay Comics by the Kumeyaay Visual Storytelling Project exhibit.
Located on the unceded ancestral homeland of the Kumeyaay Nation, the Museum of Us is proud to partner with the Kumeyaay Visual Storytelling Project.
About the Kumeyaay Visual Storytelling Project
The Kumeyaay Visual Storytelling Project (KVSP) is a partnership between Kumeyaay Nation members and NAGPRA Comics co-producers. KVSP is a form of Community Engaged Comics – thoughtfully researched, community authored and vetted, graphic narratives. The co-producers of NAGPRA Comics developed this method to honor communities calling for more accurate and Indigenous-centered accounts of Indigenous Peoples’ histories and experiences.
Funding for the Kumeyaay Visual Storytelling Project community-engaged comic was provided by California Humanities for All Grant and the Whiting Foundation Public Engagement Fellowship, with additional support from the University of Colorado Boulder and Kumeyaay Community College.
The Kumeyaay Visual Storytelling Project exhibition first went on view at the La Jolla Historical Society with generous support from the Prebys Foundation and the City of San Diego Department of Cultural Affairs.

Traveling Banner Exhibit
The Museum of Us partners with the Kumeyaay Visual Storytelling Project to provide a traveling banner exhibit to community organizations in San Diego County, free-of-charge!
